Breaking Glass Magazine – February 2024

In an attempt to shake off the cold, this month we’ll be looking ahead to the array of festivals scheduled across spring and summer in the UK. And while we’re still happy to be wrapped up warm inside, gig season seems to be properly picking up now after the holiday period, so there’ll be lots of live music coverage coming your way again too.

As always, happy to hear from photographers who’d like to showcase their work in one of our In Focus features, or from anyone who reckons their playlist curating skills would leave Spotify’s daily mixes standing, for a Vinyl Countdown selection. Drop us an email for either, details on Contact page.

Almost the end of the year, but we still have lots to squeeze in during December with plenty more live music coverage, and our annual photo galleries which are always a highlight.

A reminder that we have two year end galleries:

– 2023 Through the Lens (open for any other subject matter that you’ve shot this year)

Photographers are welcome to submit to either of both of these galleries, max 2 images per person per gallery, so take a scroll back through what you’ve been up to this year and start the next to impossible task of picking your favourites! Please send photos using the guidelines below, closing date for submissions 10th December.

Best Music Shots of 2023
Please include the artist, venue and month taken
2023 Through the Lens

– Everyone is welcome to join in; professional or hobbyist, camera or phone, film or digital photographer
– Copyright remains with the photographer; by submitting your photos you grant us permission to include them on the website and our social media with credit
– You may submit 1 or 2 images per person per gallery
– Please include your name, how you would like to be credited and links you would like us to include to your work, e.g. website / socials

5 Years of Breaking Glass Magazine – October 2023

Breaking Glass Magazine – October 2023

Time flies when you’re editing an online magazine, or something along those lines…

So, five years ago I had this crazy idea to start Breaking Glass with no real certainty if it would last or who’d be involved. It started with the help of a few friends contributing photos, giving interviews and offering access to gigs and exhibitions, and since then so many of you have been involved it’s a bit overwhelming to look back on. We’ve been through lockdowns, headed to festivals, covered loads of amazing artists, new music and events, and it’s become this collective of brilliant people who I’m always grateful for and in awe of your talent. Thank you doesn’t cover it but lots of love to everyone who’s been a part of it so far. I guess we’ll keep going and see where we end up next x

Breaking Glass Magazine – September 2023

Once in a very rare while, a band comes along that turns everything on its head and makes the perfect antidote to all the ills of the world. If you’re a regular on here, it will come as no surprise that we rate Glasgow’s VLURE in this category. If you’ve just joined us, take the recommendation as an opening gift.

The last fortnight has seen trips to Leeds, Hull, London, Brighton (OK, that one wasn’t so much a trip as a stroll), Bristol and Birkenhead to catch their explosive live shows. Check out our tour gallery here.

It’s going to be a hard act to follow but rest assured, there’s plenty more to come this month, including some near neighbours of theirs who have been long time favourites. Watch this space…

Breaking Glass Magazine – August 2023

Summertime, and the living is mostly wet and windy (you can’t live in the UK and not complain about the weather, it’s compulsory).

However, a bit of rain is not going to stop us from having a great August – we’re off to cover Brighton & Hove Pride at the weekend, and looking forward to seeing some very favourite artists this month… more of that to come. Keep an eye on our Insta for updates, and if you’re posting photos of festivals and events that you’re at, feel free to tag us and share the fun!

Breaking Glass Magazine – July 2023

We’ve really enjoyed seeing lots of different photographers’ images lately through In Focus features and the Summertime gallery. If you’re off on a summer trip we’d love to showcase the best of your holiday destination, or if you just want to show us round the place where you live we’d be up for a tour! More details for our new feature This Must Be The Place here.

Not a photographer but love music – why not talk us through the 10 songs that changed your world? More info here on what’s needed to have your very own Vinyl Countdown, and other ways to contribute.

Breaking Glass Magazine – June 2023

Hope everyone’s doing well out there. We’ve had a wave of new photographer features lately and it’s great to see the range of talent and images being produced. So, it feels like a good time to put together another photo gallery and, reflecting the run of warm weather while it lasts, let’s get a Summertime gallery together.

You can interpret this fairly freely – maybe you’ve been down to the beach or at a festival, did a seagull steal your ice cream or has your cat been napping in the sun? Images can be recent or from a previous year. Happy to include music related shots but if you’re going down the festival route please give us something that reflects the theme, not just something that happened in the summer – people in the crowd, vendor stands, sunsets, etc. are going to fit the bill better for this one rather than stage shots, and there are/will be plenty of opportunities to have your music photos featured other times.

Here’s how to submit:
– Breaking Glass is not a profit-making publication; we can’t pay for contributions nor do we charge for submissions as some sites do
Everyone is welcome to join in; professional or amateur, camera or phone, film or digital photographer
– Copyright remains with the photographer; by submitting your photos you grant us permission to include them on the website and our social media with credit

Breaking Glass Magazine – May 2023

Well, it looks as though spring has sprung and being close to the Brighton seaside, May is shaping up to be a busy, busy month! We’ll be covering some Fringe events again this year, and destroying our feet running around The Great Escape – come and say hello if you see us there.

Once all of that has quietened down, it would be great to get another photo gallery online. Any ideas for themes are very welcome, just drop us a message if you have thoughts on what would be good to include – previous galleries can be found here.

Breaking Glass Magazine – April 2023

Breaking Glass Magazine – April 2023

We’ve had a lot of new interest in the magazine lately so, for anyone just joining us, here’s a little more about what we do…

The two key and often colliding components of Breaking Glass are music and photography. We love to discover and support new music, bringing you coverage from gigs and festivals across the UK. That’s not to say you won’t see some established artists popping up too, plus contributors from overseas, and we also maintain an interest in other events, films, books and exhibitions.

Throughout the year we offer up the opportunity for photographers to showcase their work, in an individual feature and/or in one of our themed galleries. All subjects and styles of photography are welcome, as are all levels of experience – Breaking Glass will always be a safe and inclusive space and we’re really proud of its ever growing community.

The best way to keep posted on new content is to give us a follow on Instagram and Twitter – and feel free to drop us a message if you have any ideas for new features, we’d love to hear from you.

As always, March brings International Women’s Day. At a point where there’s still the need for much conversation about equality (or lack of) in the creative industry, we’re delighted to take the opportunity to celebrate the work of some awesome women photographers.

Our IWD gallery will be live on Wednesday 8th and we look forward to sharing some fantastic images with you. For a flavour of what’s to come, our cover picture for March is of Meduulla, rapper and poet, at Love Music Hate Racism, Matt & Phreds, Manchester.

Well, January felt like the longest, coldest month ever… enough with the doom and gloom though, it’s February, it’s Independent Venue Week and there’s loads of great new music and gigs coming through, so things are undeniably looking up.

Supporting grassroots venues is more important than ever, and this week is a fitting celebration of all they do to promote upcoming artists – if you want to share your IVW experiences or photos, drop us a message, we’d love to hear from you.

Also keen to start running more photographer features again – we have one ready to publish in the next couple of days and would love to hear from you if you’d like us to showcase your work, all styles and subjects welcome; some previous features here.

For those who haven’t taken part before (or have just plain forgotten) we publish two online galleries each December; the first is for live music shots, and the second is a general gallery of your favourite images you’ve taken this year – any subject matter excluding live music photos because they have their own special place.

Details for submission are below, and you can check out our 2021 galleries here for inspiration:

How to submit:

– Breaking Glass is not a profit-making publication; we can’t pay for contributions nor do we charge for submissions as some sites do.

– Everyone is welcome, professional or amateur, camera or phone, film or digital photographer.

Copyright remains with the photographer; by submitting your photos you grant us permission to include them on the website and our social media with credit.

– You can submit to one or both of the galleries, a max of 2 images per gallery.

– For the live music gallery please include artist, venue and month taken.

– For both galleries, include your name, how you would like to be credited and links you would like us to include to your work, e.g. website / socials.

– Photos should be sent as jpg files please – portrait / landscape / square / colour / black & white are all fine, any style, you can send with or without watermark.

– Please ensure there is no offensive content and that you have permission to share images of people not taken in a public place or including minors.

Throughout July we’ll be joining in with #FemaleVoices on our socials, posting a track from one of our favourite female artists every day. With only 31 spaces to fill, it’s not going to be easy to choose, but suffice to say there will be some long established artists in the mix surrounded by a whole bunch of new talent. Check out our choices on Twitter and Instagram – and why not join in with some of your own?

Festival coverage will continue throughout the summer, and we’ll be looking to put together a photo gallery of your best-loved festival memories from 2022 a little later in the year, so bookmark your best shots!
